In-vessel bulk green waste composting
West London Composting (WLC) is an in-vessel bulk composting facility. Our facility can process 50,000 tonnes of organic waste each year, from which we manufacture a variety of high quality soil conditioners for agricultural and commercial uses. WLC is licensed by the Environment Agency and Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
West London Composting is situated near the M40 in Uxbridge, Middlesex. We pride ourselves in developing long-term relationships with our customers, offering flexible and affordable solutions for diverting green, and kerbside collected kitchen waste from landfill, in line with government requirements.
At WLC, everything received at our 100,000 tonne capacity site is composted in-vessel, complying with the 2003 EU Animal By-Products Regulations (ABPR), the only method accepted by Defra for processing kerbside collected kitchen waste.
On arrival, material is shredded before beginning its rigorous decontamination process in one our sixteen, 220 tonne capacity vessels that comprise Barrier One. When the vessels are full, temperature probes are inserted into the compost. In line with ABPR requirements, records are kept to demonstrate to the State Veterinary Service that material has reached the required temperature of 60°C for two consecutive days. This stage of the process typically takes between ten and 14 days. At the end of this period, material is transferred across to Barrier Two, featuring a further sixteen, 220 tonne capacity vessels, and the process repeated.
Once the in-vessel stage of the process is finished, we transport the material to our Maturation Site where it is laid out in long 'windrows'. These are turned regularly for up to eight weeks, after which the material is screened to ensure that it conforms to the required size.
From the green waste delivered to our site we produce a 0-25mm compost for use on agricultural land. Our compost is PAS 100 and QP certified and provides a range of beneficial nutrients and physico-chemical properties when applied to the soil. It meets requirements for chemical and physical contaminants, allowing safe application on all land types.
Scientific research carried out on the use of source segregated compost in agriculture demonstrates the following key benefits:
Combining these effects with the nutrient content of the compost provides sustainable benefit to the agricultural use on farmland, whilst reducing the need for increasingly expensive inorganic fertiliser materials. If you need details of nutrient content in our product please contact us.
We can deliver bulk product to farms and other agricultural businesses within a 100 mile radius of our West London site. We also welcome local residents and organisations wishing to purchase supplies from our site during normal trading hours.
